The thugs have been following the Cage Master all along. 😱

As the flock of birds dissipates, our adventurers recognize someone familiar emerging in front of them.
It is Cage Master Seilar, the head of the Grand Aviary.

Seilar

I had enough of you interfering with our cause!
His voice trembles in the chamber formed by the thorned overgrowth.
I shall tolerate you no more!

Squint

Hey old geezer, who do you think you…

Seilar

Hush at once!
He waves his hand, engulfing Squint in vines and thorns.
Kait watches with fear and denial as Squint turns silent.
Ahh…much better.

He ain't jokin'. 😮

Kait

What are you doing? You are the Cage Master! How can you be behind this?
You are supposed to protect those majestic creatures, not hurt them.

Seilar

Pfff…hurt them? - he bursts into laughter - majestic creatures you say?
Tell me now librarian, why does your kind enslave these majestic birds and force them to carry out your every bidding? Where do you get the entitlement to do that?

Kait

I am not a librarian anymore… - he mutters and casts his gaze down, then continues - And we care for our birds very much and cherish them in return for their services.

Seilar

NonsenseJumping to conclusions! I started at the bottom and climbed the ladder in the Aviary. I've seen it all how your companions are broken and tamed at the right age.
I had to fake many a smile with members in the higher circles, all so full of themselves. But after decades, I was finally elected as Cage Master and now I'm in power to make changes for the better!

Faint light begins to radiate from the emerald crystal in his staff as he slams it to the ground.

You and your…khm…friend…
…are nothing but a minor miscalculation in my plans.

I hope you understand that I can't have you roaming around the city, while I'm liberating my flock. They shall never again be locked up in cages.

The green tainted glow of the staff strengthens as creeping vines come forth from the dense vegetation to consume Kait. Just before everything turns black, he catches a glimpse of Seilar spreading his cloak and transforming into a Giant Eagle. The dome above them opens up as the plantlife makes way for him to fly towards the Aviary.

Sheesh!
Seilar's got the attitude, I can give him that much. 🤣

Story Cubes, I choose you! 🔗

Question: What's the deal with him tho? I need some answers.
Rory's Story Cubes:
    Turtle
    Pyramid
    Smiley person
His robes and staff suggests he is a druidTurtle of some sorts, but I think he kept it a secret until now. He was wearing a foreign symbolPyramid on his clothing, unrecognized by Kait.
He truly believes this is the best forSmiley person the Giant Eagles and will take any means necessary to ensure his scheme comes to fruition.

The Final Showdown

Tarot: 3 of Clubs ⇾ Travel, freedomNot foreshadowing…
Not at all!

Location: tent ⇾ I'm reusing it, since the Final Showdown will take place at the Grand Aviary.
Threat: Magic wand ⇾ Druid shenanigans
Threat: Tree ⇾ Creeping vines, Seilar's specialty

Action: After the druid leaves, Zhar arrives through the opening to help them.
Outcome: Yes
Zhar lands and successfully cuts off the vines with his talons. They immediately fly towards the Aviary after Squint and Kait regain their senses.
By the time they land, the area looks completely different. The entirety of the Aviary is sealed by the same kinds of vines and cacti. The building's completely surrounded, all entrances blocked. If they approach, the plants lash out, in an attempt to grab them.

Action: Squint goes to get help from the city guard.
Outcome: Yes
Squint leaves to get reinforcements. She successfully finds help, but will take time till she gets back.

Action: Kait tries to burn the vines.
Outcome: No, but…
Reaction card: Angry face
While Squint's away, Kait lights some torches, and tries to burn the defensive vegetation.
Unfortunately it has little effect, the burnt parts are quickly replaced by new shoots. Even though he failed, at least he hears the Cage Master angrily shouting at him to get lost for good.

Action: Kait tries to think of something, maybe he's heard of these plants in the Library and they may have a weakness.
Outcome: Yes, but…
Reaction card: Looks like I forgot to draw a reaction card again, but at least I rolled a story cube instead! 🤣
Rory's Story Cubes: Scarab
He does remember something! There's a certain kind of bug that eats these plants, but these bugs are not native here (neither are these vines the druid conjured).

During all this, some sort of magicThe other threat goes up inside and the aviary lights up.
Seeing that, Kait's determinationOr rather desperation? increases.

Action: As a final resort, Kait sprints against the wall of vines to make it through by sheer force.
Outcome: No, butBoy I'm drawing bad cards today.
😅…
Reaction card: Disappointed face
He voluntarily runs into the embrace of the vines, failing to ram through them. However, the wall of barbs soon collapses as the entire eagle colony storms out of the Aviary. Kait seesDisappointed face that the birds are under Seilar's control.

Yikes, there is only one action left from the Scene!!!

I have a feeling Kait will need to make a choice very soon. 😞

Seilar

What will you do now hero?
You can either chase those birds I sent after the civilians or you can leave your people to their fates and try to stop me! 😈

Kait notices a smaller group of eagles heading in a different direction. Sees how the mind controlled birds attack the commonfolk. The ugly truth of reality strucks him as he looks back and sees the druid's magic slowly taking over Zhar too.
His companion's eyes are getting cloudy, and the giant bird seems confused and bewildered as Kait approaches him.

Kait

Forgive me Zhar, but I need to save the people.
Farewell, my friend… I hope we meet againI'm not crying,
I just have sand in my eyes.
😭.

By this time Squint have arrived with the guards and are struggling to fend off the eagles.
He looks at Seilar with contempt, the druid's face burnt into his memory forever. Then he rushes towards the people in need.

Action: Kait, Squint and the guards try to fend off the eagles.
Outcome: Yes, but…
Reaction card: Anxious face
The guards brought nets so they can capture the birds without unnecessarily harming them. They manage to neutralize them, but Kait's unable to get Zhar out of his thoughtsAnxious face the whole time.

Unfortuantely, when they return, Seilar, his group and the rest of the flock are gone without a trace.

Ever since then,
even the wind blew differently.
At least this is how it felt for Kait.
